Clean eating = happy me!!

I'm very happy to report I'm feeling great.  Had a few set backs over the last few months but one thing remains true and consistent, and that's when I clean up my diet, my arthritis improves drastically.

I'm still sticking to the same foods that have helped me over the last 9 months.  Wow, 9 months since I started this "experiment" and I haven't had to go back on my long list of big bad drugs! (Humira injection, prednsisone, naproxyn, plaquenil)  I'm so happy that I stuck through it and have reached this point.

How are you all doing out there?  Are you finding relief through elimination diets?

  1. Hi Jen

Thanks for sharing. Good to hear you are doing well. I am trying this diet:

it is supposed to heal the gut and thereby heal autoimmune disease. If we get the gut healed and our microflora back in balance then the food allergies should resolve and the autoimmune reaction should end.

It's a long slow process but it makes sense to me. Also trying low dose naltrexone. See:

I met a woman online in complete remission using these two approaches.

  2. Hi Jen
I just started naturopathy for my Psoriatic Arthritis (yet another ai diseases) and find that the natural diet works better than the meds I was on. It has only been a couple of weeks for me (one full proper one, at that) and am amazed at the results! Glad to see your site as there are a lot of skeptics out there. I am curious about what your Rheumatologist says as I go see mine in two more weeks and am nervous to bring up the route I am taking. And hey, I'm in Ottawa too so it's nice to see a local doing the same thing. Good luck and good health, I will watch your blog as this is all so new to new - the natural route, not the arthritis.

  3. My 3 year old son has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis too! I just found your blog and have been reading through your posts. They are so encouraging, thanks! We just started the GAPS diet and have seen a complete turnaround in my son! He is walking/running/jumping and hopefully we can start to wean him off of his methotrexate soon. It's so exciting to see what a good diet(elimination diet) can do for your body. Have you heard of the GAPS diet or are you just doing a basic elimination diet?

  4. I tend to think diet helps with it, too. And exercise.

Which is why I've decided to ride my bike across the US. :)

  5. Jen,

CONGRATS on coming this far with your journey! It's amazing! Could you possibly post a sample menu plan of a few days? I'm so curious how much variety you have now. How do you not get bored? How do you cope with eating strictly at family/friends events that center around eating (summer BBQs, birthday parties, ect)?
How much do you this has impacted your son & husband's eating habits?

My RA actually went into "remission" for a few months, but has now returned. I've been off all meds for about 3 months & want to avoid getting back on. So I'm going to be starting my own elimination diet.

Thanks so much for your blog! It's an excellent source of hope & inspiration!

  6. @ Isabelle- thanks for your post. I have asked my Naturpath to look into the naltrexone, sounds encouraging!!

@ Janet- good for you for trying the natural route as well!! I haven't seen my Rheumatologist in almost a year- I am due to go in July so I will be excited to see what he says! I am in a flare up now :( As I haven't been staying on track but I fully intend on being 100% when I go see him! I'll keep you posted!!

@ Monica- that is terrific about your son! Do you have a blog that I can follow? Keep it up!!!

@ Zoey- hi!! I'm glad you are starting your own elimination diet- it really is the only way to know what foods adversely affect you. I'm off track now and your post is a good motivator to get my butt back in gear! I am used to bringing my own foods to places, and most of my family and friends know of my restrictions and actually prepare "Jen friendly" food. It really helps. As for my son and husband- as a result of the way I cook, they eat healthy! My 2 yr. old is so well behaved and never has tantrums or flies off the handle when he doesn't get his way.. I attribute it to getting good nutritious food!! Thanks for your post!!
